Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel is back
Heather Mays - Thu, Sep, 2, 2010
Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel is back!
Following a public outcry in local media outlets after it was dropped, Horne Radio is bringing back Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel on WLOD 98.3 FM and WMPY AM 670.
“We decided to go to Scott Shannon’s True Oldies when the program was dropped from 98.7 FM,” Tony Cox, Horne Radio general manager, said.
“There was a segment of the market that was not going to be served, so we wanted to fill that vacuum that had been created,” he added.
Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel will kick off Friday, Sept. 3, simulcasting on 98.3 FM and AM 670.
“People will have the oldies for the Labor Day holiday — they can sit back, listen and enjoy it,” Cox said.
“Horne Radio is really happy about bringing Scott Shannon’s True Oldies back to the Knoxville market and look forward to keeping that format for a long, long time,” he added.
Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel plays music from the 1960s up to the 1980s, with an emphasis in the 60s and 70s.
“Scott Shannon’s True Oldies is all about variety. He utilizes a music library that is well-researched, and is packed with thousands of the greatest hits from the 50s actually through the 80s, with a focus on through the mid-60s to the mid-70s,” Cox said.
Listeners will hear artists such as Elvis, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Chicago, The Dave Clark Five, The Rolling Stones, Ricky Nelson, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Sam Cook and many more.
“We really like it because he tells stories about the history of rock and roll each time you listen. It’s personality driven and fast-moving, and Scott focuses on the biggest hits and the biggest stars,” Cox said.
“Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel is unique. He interacts with the listeners through phone calls and direct-to-the-studio e-mails, and really makes the audience part of the show; that’s why we’re happy with it,” he added.
Every year, Shannon counts down the top five hits from a different year in his “True Oldies Daily Countdown,” along with his “Rock and Roll Calendar” and his “Quick Look Back” at history and the events of each day, plus “One-Hit Wonders,” the “forgotten 45s and cruising classics.”
Shannon is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C., and the Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago. He’s also received Billboard magazine’s Air Personality of the Year seven times and Program Director of the Year six times.
He has appeared on numerous television shows and was a host on VH1 in the 1980s.
He’s the official voice of the Sean Hannity Show, and “he also knits his own socks,” Cox said.
