HVA’s Lam selected to 2010-11 School Board seat

A Hardin Valley Academy senior will be the voice of Knox County students on Knox County’s Board of Education during the 2010-11 school term.

Hester Lam, pictured left, has been appointed as the Knox County Board of Education’s school representative.

“I can give students a voice. Students are as likely to speak up. … I hope they’ll come to me,” Hester said.

Hester said she has learned to “speak because I have something to say, not because I have to. … I don’t want to speak just to speak.”

Hester, hailing from the Fountain City area, is a transfer student from Central High School.

She spent her first two years of high school at Central. However, she took the advice of a guidance counselor at the school, opting to take advanced placement classes that HVA offers.

“At HVA, they gave me the option for more AP classes,” Hester said.

She has seen two different worlds in her high school stint, giving her a different viewpoint than many other students.

She saw the uniqueness she could bring to the Board and decided to use that experience in her application essay.

“I wrote about how I can represent two different schools,” she said.

As chair for the Youth Action Coalition, she hears peer-level school concerns on a regular basis.

She is an active church member and sings with the student choir at Wallace Memorial Baptist. She has played piano for nine years and enjoys tutoring peers and adults with special needs through various organizations.

Hester said she had an idea of what she was getting into with the appointment –– she did her research.

“I talked with the girl [who served as student representative] before me,” she said.

She found out the meetings could run as long as five-to-six hours, while others are shorter.

This wasn’t a spur of the moment choice for Hester.
