• Heska Amuna invites the community to celebrate the high holidays at the synagogue for the New Year, Rosh Hashanah, Thursday and Friday, Sept. 9 and 10, with services beginning at 9:30 am. For the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, services start at 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 17, with the opening accompanied by an ensemble from Knoxville Symphony Orchestra playing a composition of “Kol Nidre,” by Maestro Lucas Richman. • Barbara Dooley, mother of new University of Tennessee head football coach Derek Dooley, will speak at YOKE Youth Ministries’ annual fundraising banquet, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Knoxville Convention Center. Dooley is the author of “Put Me In, Coach,” a book chronicling her life as a Southeastern Conference football wife and is a motivational speaker. The YOKE banquet, themed “Celebrating Volunteers,” will recognize the volunteer spirit of East Tennesseans who have carried YOKE’s ministry for more than 30 years to 25 campuses in Anderson, Blount, Jefferson and Knox counties. • Central Baptist Church of Bearden has voted to call Dr. Wade Bibb, Ph.D., as its new senior pastor. Bibb is the 20th senior pastor for the church and begins his ministry at Central Bearden Sunday, Sept. 12, preaching in both the 9 and 10:30 a.m. worship services. Bibb received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla., and received Master of Divinity and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
• Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church will hold its annual Bluegrass Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 2, at the church. Event will feature Barry Scott & Second Wind, Still House, Bethel’s Bluegrass and Bethel’s Southern Gospel groups, Will Tate & 6ix Mile, Logan Murrell and Darin and Brooke Aldridge. Championship BBQ will provide food; arts and crafts vendors will have booths and kids can enjoy games and inflatables. Admission is $5 per person; children 12 and under are free. • St. John Neumann Catholic Church will begin its Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults program for 2010-2011 at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 8, in the school library, 625 St. John Court. • Catholic Charities USA recently recognized Catholic Charities of East Tennessee for its innovative approach to assisting homeless families. The $25,000 award was presented at a recent Leadership Conference in Nashville. Catholic Charities’ program provides housing and other assistance to one- or two-parent families for up to two years, helping them transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency.
• Calvary Baptist Church will host Men’s Monday Night Open Gym, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Mondays. Open to men college age and up.
• The Joshua Resource Center has opened a program site in Knoxville at Cokesbury United Methodist Church’s Celebrate Recovery Room, 9919 Kingston Pike, Room 303. • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints held its second annual Memorial Day breakfast May 31. Event was held at 11837 Grigsby Chapel Road and more than 275 people attended, including Farragut Town Administrator David Smoak and Alderman Bob Markli. Bill Dunn was featured speaker.

• New Destiny Bible Church has begun meeting at 10 a.m. each Sunday at Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, 7621 Kingston Pike. All are welcome to the new non-denominational church. Pastor is the Rev.
