Hawks grounded at West

The Hardin Valley Hawks took to the road Friday, Aug. 27, for a match-up with the West High School Rebels at the Rebels’ Bill Wilson Field.

In a second half rally, the Hawks came back from a 14-0 first-half deficit to end the game just seven points short, 21-14.

Following a third Rebel touchdown just three minutes into the third quarter, Hawks senior quarterback Jake Bishop pushed his way nine yards straight up the gut for the Hawks’ first six of the game. Senior Ryan Bataille’s point-after-touchdown kick was good, cutting the lead to 21-7.

“We had a pass play called and were sending Adam Schlosser across the middle and we thought we would get that. They read that and kind of left the middle open. I saw that and thought, ‘I am going to try this and try to get in the end zone.’ Luckily I got in,” Bishop said.

Wes Jones, HVA head coach, praised Bishop’s “gutsy performance. Jake played his heart out. He got busted a couple of times, but he stuck that ball in the end zone and hung in there and drove us at the end. He did a great job leading us tonight.”

With just four minutes left, the Hawks struck again with a 29-yard scoring run up the left side by senior running back Joshua Krebs. “Offensive line made a huge hole and wide outs blocked pretty well, so I just boxed it outside and stuck it in the corner of the end zone,” Krebs said.

Bishop said, “We knew coming in that this was a great defense. ... But our offensive line … they stood in there and they got better as the game went.”

Jones said about his defense, “We did a great job defending the run tonight and our defense sucked it up in there.”
