• Kyler Kerbyson, Knoxville Catholic High School’s 6-foot-5, 295-pound All-state senior offensive lineman who recently committed to head coach Derrick Dooley’s Tennessee Volunteers, was honored by a national publication: named to Catholic-SportsNet High School Football’s Preseason All-American Third Team Offense.

• Knoxville Free to Breathe 5K Run/1 Mile Walk uniting people who are passionate about fighting lung cancer, is Saturday, Oct. 16, in Village Green subdivision, Jamestowne Boulevard, Farragut. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m., with 1 Mile Walk beginning at 8:15 a.m. and 5K Run at 8:30. Online registration closes Oct. 13 (FreeToBreathe.org), mail-in closes Oct. 11. • Annual Bicycle Ride Across Tennessee, which will kick off its 21st year with a seven-day ride beginning Sunday, Sept. 12. • Carson-Newman College men’s soccer midfielder Ben Backstrom has been named to the All-South Atlantic Conference Second Team. Helping Farragut High School win the 2007 Class AAA state title, Backstrom tallied four goals four assists last season.



• Farragut Baseball, Inc. is about to conclude its inaugural season sponsoring Farragut Flag Football for youth ages 5-9. Games, which started in July and held at Mayor Bob Leonard Park Field 5, will conclude in early September. Sixty players completed in two divisions – Rookie League (ages 5-6) and Pro Bowlers League (7-9). The league, sanctioned by the NFL allowing the wearing of NFL-style jerseys and use of NFL-type flags and footballs, is the only such league in East Tennessee.

• A freestyler, Gavin Hughes was part of a Sugarwood Swim Team 9-10 boys medley relay that finished high during the recent Greater Knoxville Area Interclub Swim Association “City Meet.” Teammates were Eddie Ceausu (backstroke), Ryan Wiebe (breaststroke) and William Brown (butterfly).
