Soccer drama, domination Late goals earn FHS win, tie; Bearden wins 2 with 11-0 edge Alan Sloan - Thu, Sep, 2, 2010
Two dramatic finishes and two dominant performances highlighted the first week of Westside girl soccer action.
While Bearden blanked Maryville 2-0 then crushed 2008 and 2009 Class AAA state semifinalist Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett 9-0, Farragut relied on the Rachael Clark-to-Josie Jennings game-winning combo.
Clark’s header, off a Jennings feed, in the game’s final minutes allowed the FHS Lady Admirals to escape by the skin of their teeth and edge Greeneville 3-2.
“I was very proud of them to come back and win in the last couple of minutes,” FHS head coach Dennis Lindsay added about this season-opening battle at Farragut Intermediate School field Tuesday, Aug. 24.
Ashley Reveiz, on a Clark assist, and Skylar Brewer also scored for FHS.
Battling back to earn a 1-1 tie at Oak Ridge Thursday, Aug. 26, thanks to a Blair Rhodes goal with a little more than six minutes to play, Farragut took a 1-0-1 record into this week.
For Bearden, three-time All-state forward Samantha Turner recorded a hat-trick (three goals) and two assists.
Midfielder Rebecca Stover added two goals and two assists as BHS improved to 2-0-0.
“Meagan Yoakley played great in the back both games,” BHS head coach Eric Turner said. “Allison Daniels, center-mid[fielder], is playing awesome ... . And Rebecca Stover’s had two great games.” Yoakley, Kristi Granger, Gabrielle Gianeselli and Mackenize Wall also scored for BHS. Courtney Norman, Joanna Logan and Cassidy Smith each had one assist.
