Vols Mays, ex-Irish star, on Rimington Trophy List

Tennessee Football senior center Cooper Mays, a former star lineman at Knoxville Catholic High School, garnered preseason recognition Friday, Aug. 4, after being named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List.

The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I college football.

“A preseason All-SEC selection by multiple outlets, Mays enters his third straight season as UT’s starting center and has started 19 consecutive games entering the 2023 campaign,” a UT Sports Information press release stated.

“ ... Last fall, Mays anchored the Volunteers’ offensive line that was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award for the first time in school history and paved the way for the nation’s No. 1 offense in terms of scoring (46.1 points per game) and total offense (525.5 yards per game). He started all 13 games, saw action on 894 snaps and did not allow a sack in the final five games of the year,” the release further stated.
