BHS girls win 2 of 3 at Bradley

Led by All-Tournament selection Jai-Jai McLaughlin, Bearden's Lady Bulldogs traveled to Cleveland and won two of three games at Bradley Central Thanksgiving tourney Friday-Sunday, Nov. 26-28.

Overcoming an opening-night 45-37 loss to Brentwood Academy Nov. 26, BHS used 16 points from McLaughlin, junior point guard, to whip East Hamilton 41-28 Saturday.

“She stood out for us,” BHS head coach Richard Cowan said about McLaughlin.

Three Lady Bulldogs reached double figures in a 45-39 victory versus Chattanooga Brainerd Sunday, led by Mallory Uekman's 12 points. McLaughlin and Lexus Norwood, a freshman guard, each scored 10.

“I thought we took a big step forward today against Brainerd,” Cowan said. “We played much more under control. We executed our defense probably better than we have at any time since we've been playing that zone”

Individually, “Mallory Uekman got us off to a good start today with some good offense,” Cowan said about his senior wing, who led BHS with 13 points versus Brentwood Academy. “Lexus gave us a big lift offensively.

“And I thought Priscilla Craig played really well for us,” the coach added about his 6-foot senior post. “Her greatest value is defense and rebounding.”

Junior forward Cozette Gaspard worked her way into the starting lineup versus Brainerd “because she's been working really hard,” Cowan said. “She did well today.”
