Jones Automotive marks 33 years in Farragut

Tracy Roberts, owner of Jones Automotive, said the last 33 years have brought lots of changes to his business and to the town of Farragut.

“The business has grown just tremendously with the Town. It grew as the Town grew,” said Roberts, son-in-law of Jones Automotive founder Bob Jones.

“We have some customers coming today who have been coming here since before I was here, actually,” Roberts, who began working at the repair shop in 1987, said.

“Our regular people have kept us going and building,” he added.

Bob Jones and his son, Larry, opened Jones Automotive in 1977 at the corner of Hobbs Road and Kingston Pike. In 1982, the business moved to its current location off Watt Road. In 1992, Bob retired. In 1996, the business expanded and renovated to its current nine bays.

“We’ve seen Watt Road go from being just a little two-lane road to being almost a highway now.

“Farragut has gone from being an unincorporated little community to being a very nice Town that appeals to people to live in,” Roberts, who graduated from Farragut High School in 1979, said.

Anyone gone for the last 30 years, he said, wouldn’t recognize Farragut. And Roberts said his own industry has changed as well.

“Today’s car has more technology in it than the Saturn V rocket that took the astronauts to the moon. The change in a 25-year period that has gone into the automotive repair industry, I just wonder at it. And it keeps growing constantly,” he said.

“Our society as a whole has changed just in the last 25 years in tremendous ways,” he added.

“I read an article this morning saying the age of the average car on the American road has gone up 20 percent in the last three years,” Roberts said.

“And servicing them comes along with that.

“The quality of cars has gone up much better too. People complain about their cars, but cars used to be worn out at 100,000 miles. Now people will drive cars 150- and 200,000 miles,” he added.

Roberts said his greatest goal for Jones Automotive is that customers will come to think of Roberts and his employees as family.

“You want customers who you can build a relationship with,” Roberts said.

“We’ve built our reputation on being honest. ... It’s more the idea of somebody who is there, they’re going to do what they say and stand behind what they do ... and do it with integrity.

“We really stress quality repairs. ... I only use equipment I can stand behind and feel good about,” he added.

Roberts said many of his employees are ASE master certified, the highest mechanic certification they can earn.

Jones Automotive performs all types of mechanical repair, including tune-ups, brake repair, transmission repair and replacement and even minor body repairs.

“We’re an A to Z repair shop,” Roberts said.

“We offer quality service at a fair price,” he added.

Jones Automotive is NAPA and AC Delco certified, and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is closed Saturdays and Sundays.
