Benefit Your Life expands

Courtney Holden can claim something not many small business owners can — not only has she held on during the recession, she’s expanded.

Holden owns Benefit Your Life in the Station West Shopping Plaza, 620 North Campbell Station Road, and has expanded the healthy living store to include a grocery section, kitchen and smoothie bar.

“We’re now 100 percent gluten free,” Holden said.

When she opened the store in 2008, Holden carried a variety of gluten free and other healthy foods. Now, due to customer demand, the store is entirely gluten free.

“People don’t have time to go through the aisles of the grocery store and read every little label. ... They needed one place to come and know that things would be gluten free,” Holden said.

Holden said she and the other employees of Benefit Your Life — her husband, Dusty, and mother, Donna — taste-test every food item that goes on their shelves.

“Because we don’t want you to buy something and get it home and then your child who needs gluten free won’t eat it,” she said.

And taste testing also guarantees that everyone in the family can eat and enjoy gluten free foods together, rather than making an entirely separate meal for the family member with gluten sensitivity.

Holden also has extended her gluten-free product offerings to include fresh soups and smoothies made to order.

Customers can come into the store’s small café and eat a quick lunch of freshly made and locally sourced soup, Holden said.

“A lot of people will just bring a laptop and hang out for a while,” she said.

The freshly made smoothies are gluten- and dairy-free, as well as being seasonal and locally sourced. Holden said one of her most popular smoothies in the fall was Pumpkin Spice, but perennial favorites include Peach Cobbler and The Elvis, a blend of banana and peanut butter.

Besides gluten-free, natural and organic food products, Holden also offers an array of clothing, beauty and lifestyle products that are all natural. That translates to items made without harsh chemicals, where everyone can understand the items on the ingredient list, according to Holden’s website.

Holden offers everything from Simple brand shoes to bamboo clothing, all-natural nail polish to river stone floor mats.

Benefit Your Life is one of the few stores in the Knoxville area to sell the Tate’s line of beauty products, which are made with all natural ingredients, as well as the popular Mrs. Meyers cleaning supplies, made with essential oils.

“And we offer a lot of trial sizes, so someone can come in and not spend a lot of money on something that may not work for them,” Holden said.

Holden started Benefit Your Life as an online-only store in 2007, then opened a physical location in Farragut in 2008, responding to customer requests.

Benefit Your Life is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays. It is closed Sundays.

Customers can sign up for an e-mail list that includes dates and times for cooking classes, coupons and other announcements in the store.
