• Upcoming Westside girls and boys high school varsity basketball games Thursday, Dec. 16, through Wednesday, Dec. 22 (all starting with varsity girls at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted): Farragut teams at Knoxville Catholic, Friday, Dec. 17; at Christian Academy of Knoxville, Tuesday, Dec. 21. Hardin Valley teams host Karns Dec. 17. Bearden teams host West Dec. 17.
• Joanna Thompson, Class AAA girls cross country state champion from Knoxville Catholic High School, claimed a top-10 finish at Foot Locker Cross Country Champion-ships National Finals, San Diego, Calif., Dec. 11. Thompson, a senior, finished 10th with a time of 17:46.
• New Year's Day 5K Run and Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011 on Neyland Drive at Calhoun's on the River. Early registration available through Dec. 20. Late and race-day registration is available, with fee of $25. Participants who choose not to get a T-shirt may deduct $5 from their registration. Race day registration at Calhoun's on the River runs from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Awards will be presented to the overall first-place male and female, plus Youngest and Oldest Male and Female. • Knoxville Jr. Ice Bears Squirt "B" team traveled to Marietta, Ga., and swept past the Atlanta Knights — 4-2 and 2-1 Saturday afternoon, Dec. 11, then 6-2 Sunday morning, Dec. 12.
