West girls edge Farragut
Big Rebs 2nd quarter helps defeat Admiral boys

A swap of final-minute three-pointers, in the end, left Farragut’s Lady Admirals short by two points in a showdown of top District 4-AAA powers.

Noting his team has shot poorly in its last two games — both losses, FHS head coach Wes Edmonds’ FHS girls fell at West in a dramatic 33-31 decision Friday night, Dec. 11.

Katie Cargo, Lady Ads senior wing, connected on a three-point basket with under a minute to play, giving Farragut (8-2 overall, 0-2 in district) a 31-30 lead.

However, the Lady Rebels (8-0, 2-0) answered with a three-pointer to go back ahead 33-31 in the closing seconds.

Farragut missed a three-pointer but had a final shot to tie or win, with a quick shot to beat the buzzer, following an inbounds play in frontcourt.

However, “We never got off a good shot,” Edmonds said.

The FHS skipper said losing his team’s first two district games is “bad,” but it can be explained by poor offense.

“We haven’t shot the ball well the last two games,” he said.

“West is a really good defensive team,” Edmonds added. “They’ve got a couple of girls who can really lock down on the perimeter and two really big girls inside.”

The Lady Ads trailed 19-14 at halftime led by five points from junior post Anna Brinson. West led 24-20 after three quarters.

Farragut senior post Hayley Newby led her team with 12 points, followed by Cargo scoring nine, Brinson five, Katie Overton and Madison Blevins with two each and Whitney Smith adding a free throw.
