Cool Sports’ 3rd Annual Knoxville HoeDown hockey tourney draws Carolina, Nashville area teams

Eight high school hockey teams, including two from North Carolina and four from the Nashville area, joined two Knox-area teams for the 3rd Annual Knoxville HoeDown Tournament Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 8-9, at Cool Sports, Home of the Icearium.

Knoxville Select and Knoxville Pirates featured top players from four area high schools: Farragut, Bearden, Knoxville Catholic and Webb School of Knoxville.

FHS players included Taylor Herbst, Gage Despins, James Marchuk, Austin Scheidt, Lucas Despins, Thomas Detchemendy, Gavin Gauld, Danny Petrow, Harley Gorlewski, Karl Petrow and Aaron Tong.

Bearden players included Clint Burkhalter, Corey Staples, James Johannes, Dylan Fountaine, Nick Reed, Logan Webb, Jake Fountaine, Justin Kaemmerer and Zach Honea.

Two teams from Winston-Salem, N.C. — Raiders and Titans — joined Ravenwood Raptors, Father Ryan varsity, Father Ryan junior varsity and Independence-Page Eagles.


Format was a 14-game tournament, each team playing three games in two days, ending with a championship game Sunday afternoon between Father Ryan varsity versus Winston-Salem Raiders.

K. J. Voorhees, Cool Sports Hockey director, said the tournament has been a “big success” the past three years despite no charge for admission.
