State champ Thompson named Gatorade Runner of the Year

The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, announced Knoxville Catholic High School senior Joanna Thompson as its 2010-11 Gatorade Tennessee Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year Thursday, Jan. 13.

Thompson joins KCHS junior Megan Ferowich, 2009-2010 Gatorade Tennessee Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, as the second athlete from Catholic to win this distinguished award.

In addition to athletic excellence, this award recognizes academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the course. Thompson maintains a 3.83 grade point average.

“Joanna is self motivated, excels academically, and has a tremendous will to succeed,” KCHS athletic director Jason Surlas said. “She has a true passion for running and inspires all of us at Knoxville Catholic.” Thompson now is a finalist for Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.

Class AAA individual cross country state champion (17:51.10) last fall, Thompson went on to finish fourth in the Foot Locker South Regional championships and 10th at Foot Locker National championship (17:46), earning All-American honors.

Thompson has verbally committed to become a student-athlete at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, next fall.
