• Upcoming varsity high school basketball games for Westside teams, Thursday, Feb. 10, through Wednesday, Feb. 16 (all games start with girls game at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted): Farragut teams home versus Christian Academy of Knoxville, Thursday, Feb. 10; at Bearden, Friday, Feb. 11; Hardin Valley Academy teams at Karns Friday; District 3-AAA tournament play begins next week (first round at HVA, with final rounds at Karns High School). Bearden teams home versus Farragut Friday, Feb. 11; BHS boys home versus Carter, 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 14. (District 4-AAA Tournament begins next week at William Blount High School.

• One of the nation's top college baseball programs will be represented as featured speaker during the annual Farragut Admirals Baseball Diamond Dinner at Concord United Methodist Church Monday evening, Feb. 28. Dave Serrano, head baseball coach at Cal State Fullerton and former assistant coach with the Tennessee Volunteers, will speak to conclude the festivities. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a meet and greet with FHS players and coaches, with meals served at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children, and can be purchased by calling 865-671-2872 or


• Second annual Forget Me Not 5K walk/run to fight Alzheimer's disease will be held beginning at 8 a.m., April 9, at Lenoir City High School. Race will run through Rock Springs Trail Greenway. Awards ceremony and celebration will be held after the race including door prizes and a Memory Wall for runners are racing in honor or memory of loved ones. Pre registration and other info at

• CYF Football, based at Christian Academy of Knoxville, is holding open registration for 7-, 8-, 9- and 10-year-old tackle football teams. Rosters will be capped when full. Teams will play in AFC and NFC divisions. For more information, contact Jeff Taylor at 865-765-2119.

• A $500,000 purse awaits top finishers at PGA Nationwide Tour’s annual stop at Fox Den Country Club, once again to be played in late August. Formerly known as Knoxville Open and annually played at Fox Den in early to mid-June before last year, this season’s Nationwide Tour event runs Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 25-28.

• CBFO 11-12 All-Stars basketball, coached by David Clark, were champions of Thunder Classic in Maryville the weekend of Jan. 29-30. Knocking off a strong Celtic team to capture the championship game, CBFO will continue to play in tournaments as they and other CBFO all-star teams prepare for the Knox County Tournament in late February.

• Hardin Valley Academy Wrestling team, Region 2-AAA champions after capturing the District 3-AAA crown, found the grappling a bit tougher in Franklin last week during the 2011 Division I Class AAA State Dual Wrestling Meet. The Hawks were thumped by Independence during opening round duals, 62-3. Falling into the consolation bracket, HVA was much more competitive — despite losing. Cordova edged the Hawks 38-31.
