• Ethan Bennett, Farragut senior catcher in 2010 who helped guide FHS to its third consecutive Class AAA state crown, recently was named 2010 Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Class AAA Player of the Year after belting a state record 27 home runs while setting a national record for home runs in consecutive games, 16, during a 10-game stretch in April. Bennett, a Louisville Slugger All-American, 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year and USA Today All-USA Team honoree, hit .410 with 73 RBI. Bennett currently is a freshman catcher with the Tennessee Vols.

• Parker Wormsley, shortstop-pitcher who helped Webb School of Knoxville win a Division II-A state title last season, recently was named 2010 Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Player of the Year in Division II-A by hitting .514 with five home runs, 26 RBI and 22 stolen bases as a junior in 2010. On the mound, this two-time Louisville Slugger All-American now a Tennessee Volunteers signee was 6-1 with a 1.59 earned run average in 44 innings, including one save, with only eight walks allowed.

• Tennes-see Izaak Walton League, with the assistance of Girl Scout Troop 20130, is hosting a Outdoor Explorers guided walk on TVA's Hickory Bend land, located near Watt Road, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, April 3. • Town of Farragut now is accepting registrations for coed and men's recreational softball teams to participate in spring leagues, which begin the week of April 4 at Mayor Bob Leonard Park, 301 Watt Road. All leagues are ASA sanctioned, for participants 18 and older. Mandatory captain's meeting to be held beginning at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 24, in Farragut Town Hall, 11408 Municipal Center Drive across from Farragut Branch Post Office. Deadline to register and pay is 5 p.m., Thursday, March 17. • Town of Farragut now is accepting registrations for coed spring sand volleyball leagues to include a competitive, intermediate and two recreational leagues, with teams consisting of four to six players. All matches at Mayor Bob Leonard Park, 301 Watt Road. Each team must play with at least two women on the court at all times. Spring deadline to register and pay is 5 p.m., Thursday, March 17. • Region 2-AAA Basketball tournament play begins with girls Friday, Feb. 25, featuring the higher seed hosting games, all starting at 7 p.m., featuring top four survivors from District 4-AAA girls and boys tournament and top four finishers in District 3-AAA tourney. Boys play begins Saturday, Feb. 26. Girls semifinals are Monday, Feb. 28 at the higher seed, with championship game Wednesday, March 2. Boys semifinals are Tuesday, March 1, at higher seed, with title game Thursday, March 3. District 4-AAA boys teams — seedings not set at deadline — are Bearden, West, Knoxville Catholic and Maryville. District 4-AAA girls teams — seeding not set at deadline — are Farragut, West, Maryville and William Blount. District 3-AAA boys teams are Oak Ridge, Central, Anderson County and Karns. District 3-AAA girls teams are Hardin Valley Academy, Oak Ridge, Halls and Campbell County.

• One of the nation's top college baseball programs will be represented as featured speaker during the annual Farragut Admirals Baseball Diamond Dinner at Concord United Methodist Church Monday evening, Feb. 28. Dave Serrano, head baseball coach at Cal State Fullerton and former assistant coach with Tennessee, will speak to conclude the festivities. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a meet and greet with FHS players and coaches. • A $500,000 purse awaits top finishers at PGA Nationwide Tour's annual stop at Fox Den Country Club, once again to be played in late August. Formerly known as Knoxville Open and annually played at Fox Den in early to mid-June before last year, this season's Nationwide Tour event runs Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 25-28.
