• SMITH, Maxine Shuffler,
age 55, of Knoxville, formerly of Lakeland, Fla., Denver, Colo. and Montgomery, Ala., went home to be with her Lord early Monday morning, Jan. 31, 2011, following a long courageous battle with multiple schelosis. Maxine kept her gracious and gorgeous smile throughout her illness. She was a loving wife, daughter and sister. Maxine was born in Tacoma, Wash., was a graduate of Southeastern Bible College in Lakeland and earned her Master of Business Administration from Rollins University in Orlando, Fla. Maxine and John were married in 1980 and enjoyed traveling and working internationally for many years. Her passion for teaching and work with the disabled brought much joy and fulfillment to her life. She has joined her brother-in-law, Dan Mills, rejoicing in heaven. Maxine is survived by her husband, John W. Smith; parents, the Rev. and Mrs. William Shuffler; sisters, Lupe Mills and Charlotte Buff; brother, John Shuffler and wife, Donna; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many precious friends. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, at Drexel Christian Center in Morganton, N.C., with a Celebration of Maxine’s Life to follow at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow in the Burke Memorial Park. • COX, Gladys Katherine Rainbolt,
of Knoxville died Jan. 27, 2011. Gladys was born in Butler in Johnson County. She graduated from Watauga Academy of Butler and Steed Business College of Elizabethton. Gladys was a member of First Baptist Church Concord. Her parents were displaced by Watauga Dam and moved from Butler to Johnson City. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ernest Cox Sr.; parents, Roy Valentine Rainbolt and Lona Bertha Snyder Rainbolt; and sister, Nina Rainbolt Carbine. She is survived by her son, Richard Lee Cox (wife, Kathleen Johnson Cox); son, Charles E. Cox Jr. (wife, Regina Smith Cox); daughter, Karen Elizabeth Cox Krum (husband, Robert Alan Krum Sr.); brother, Warren G. Rainbolt; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; many nieces, nephews and caring and loving friends of many years. Graveside services were at Butler Cemetery Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011.
