Bulldogs capture Maryville DT Classic baseball crown

Bearden Baseball stopped the bleeding late last week.

Starting the season 1-5, the Bulldogs picked up a District 4-AAA win before capturing the seven-team Maryville DT Classic at Heritage High School March 24-26.

The Bulldogs (5-5, 1-1 in district) whipped host Heritage 11-1 Thursday, then took down previously unbeaten Seymour 9-1 Friday before clobbering Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett 14-4 Saturday.

After a rough time at Gulf Shores Classic in Alabama to open the season, “We stayed positive, and the kids came in that weekend and worked hard in practice,” Bearden head coach Jack Tate said. “They had tremendous attitudes after a rough tournament.”

Classic Most Valuable Player Trey York, BHS junior second baseman, led a 17-hit attack Saturday with three hits including two RBI.

Defensively, York's diving stop and throw-out to end the top of the fifth inning — with two men on base — kept Bearden's 7-4 lead intact before a seven-run Bulldogs outburst.

Craig Norwood also added three hits, as the 7-8-9 hitters in Bearden's line-up combined to go 7-for-7: Zach Sale, Norwood and freshman left fielder Lane Thomas.

Winning pitcher Rob Thress worked five innings allowing three earned runs, six hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Against Heritage, Lance's two hits included a home run, with two RBI and three runs scored.

Norwood was winning pitcher versus the Mountaineers, working five innings allowing one unearned run, four hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Lance fired one inning of scoreless relief.

Starter Ronnie Broyles pitched five innings versus Seymour, allowing one run, three hits, one walk with nine strikeouts.

Derek Lance and Chris Hamilton each had RBI doubles — Lance's driving in two — highlighting Bearden's eight-run fourth inning versus Seymour. Thomas added a two-RBI single.
