Feisty Irish can’t hold Soccer Hawks

Though shorthanded and young, Knoxville Catholic's Boys Soccer team played explosive and experienced Hardin Valley Academy to a draw for 53 minutes.

But Hayden Zelem, Hawks senior midfielder, and Brandon Roy, HVA junior midfielder, punched home goals in the final 27 minutes as Hardin Valley won 2-0 Tuesday evening, April 5, at KCHS's Blaine Stadium.

“It felt awesome,” said Zelem, who scored from 15 yards out with 27 minutes to play.

Roy scored on a free kick from about 20 yards out in the final two minutes. “They played really well, but I think it was just a matter of time before we got into a rhythm,” Roy said.

Hardin Valley improved to 5-0-2 overall, coming off last weekend's two wins and one tie in the Bearden Invitational at BHS.

Catholic fell to 3-3-1.

Mike McLean, HVA head coach, praised the play of his defense, notably Hawks goalkeeper Joey Hinshaw and defenders Trent Stethen and Garrett Hay. “They played great,” McLean said.

Though KCHS still is missing key defender Mark Mishu and starting midfielder Suddy Hutchens, Irish head coach Mark Leader praised sophomore defenders Gabe Saavedra and Andrew Tilston. “Tilston did a very good job of defending their top player, Nick Skoda,” he said.

Saavedra said Tilston “did a good job holding No. 11 [Skoda],” but added, “We just have to work better, keep our intensity up.”
