HVA takes out Cougars in five

Ty Zollmann is confident his Hardin Valley Academy Hawks will use a 17-7 District 3-AAA victory against Campbell County to springboard into uncharted waters.

About District 3-AAA, “We’ve got to get our heads into it for the rest of the season, because we’re going to win the whole thing,” said Zollmann, senior first baseman, after contributing two hits and two RBI — including the walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the fifth — in this Monday evening, April 11 romp at HVA.

The Hawks, No. 3 in district after the win (6-3), improved to 9-7 overall.

“We’ve had our ups and downs, we’d lost two straight [Cumberland County and Alcoa] coming into this one, and it’s like, ‘we need to get something going,’” Zollmann said.

Senior Clay Williams, who played second base Monday, is a versatile infielder who connected for two singles versus CCHS.

“Last year I played second, so I’m obviously very comfortable there; I worked at third all off-season, so I’ve become comfortable there, too,” he said.

Hawks head coach Kirk Renegar praised junior Clay Fielden, normally the starting first baseman, for a “nice day at third base ... made three fantastic plays, two to his left and one to his right.

“And he hit the baseball well.”

Right fielder Elliot Whitt had two bunt singles for the Hawks, while shortstop Jake Denton and catcher Tanner Russell each added a two-RBI single.

Graham Rowan, designated hitter, contributed an RBI single.

Ben Barnett, left fielder, had two RBI, one on a sacrifice fly.

Winning pitcher Joey Covell, a senior, allowed six hits and five walks with three strikeouts — much of that damage in the fourth inning.

Poor defense cost Covell two runs in the Cougars’ second inning.

Campbell County cut an 11-2 Hawks lead to 11-7 with five runs in the top of the fourth thanks to four hits, two walks and one infield error.
