Northshore, Westland drives intersection revamp nears

Construction on a dangerous intersection in West Knox County is underway, with plans to improve that intersection with a turn lane and traffic signal.

The contract for improvements to the Northshore Drive/Westland Drive intersection was awarded to Charles Blalock & Sons for $424,437.13, with utility work underway and road construction to begin soon.

The estimated completion date is July 31, TDOT spokeswoman B.J. Doughty said.

The new design of the intersection will include adding turn lanes to all approaches except for the northbound approach on Westland Drive.

Northshore will have a signalized left turn lane onto Westland. Southbound Westland also will get a signalized left turn lane on to Northshore. All approaches with turn lanes will be widened by about 12 feet.

The project has been on the books for a while, but was delayed in 2009, former TDOT spokeswoman Yvette Martinez said in a previous interview with farragutpress.
