Hawks finally beat ranked foe

Ties, ties, everywhere ties —that's been Hardin Valley Academy's fate against top boys soccer competition in 2011.

But the Hawks, unbeaten and top-five ranked among Class AAA teams in Tennessee, finally broke through — on the road, no less.

“For my guys more than anything, it was a confidence thing for them,” said HVA head coach Mike McLean, whose Hawks (10-0-4) beat former No. 1 Maryville 2-1 Friday evening, April 29.

Senior forward Nick Skoda’s early goal, in the fourth minute, was assisted by Dalton Guzman.

Guzman converted a penalty kick with about four minutes left in the game. The Rebels (14-3-0) scored in the final seconds.

“Nick Skoda had a great game, as did Dalton Guzman,” McLean said. “With that field at Maryville College, it was beautiful, we were able to possess the ball really well,” which is unlike playing HVA home games on its football field, a more narrow playing area.

“We had a lot of space ... we got into a good flow,” he added.

Skoda took advantage of the spacious field. “The more space he has the more dangerous he is,” McLean said. “And I think the players around him [including Hayden Zelem and Brandon Roy] were playing well, which kinda freed him up a little bit more.”
