Goodson no-hits Sweetwater

Jessica Goodson went from struggling as a staff ace pitcher to adding a no-hitter to her resume during Region II Challenge softball play last week at Karns and Farragut.

Goodson, Bearden sophomore staff ace, fired six no-hit innings against Sweetwater in a 4-1 Lady Bulldogs win Saturday, April 30.

“She threw really well on Saturday,” said BHS head coach Leonard Sams, adding that he told Goodson her pitching success “‘is going to determine how far we go in the district tournament.’”

Kiarra Freeman, Bearden junior centerfieder, “is just on fire right now,” Sams said about his junior centerfielder who smacked home runs against Sweetwater and Virginia High (3-2 BHS loss), while totalling eight hits in four Challenge games.

Goodson helped her cause against Sweetwater with three hits, while Jenny Parkman added two against the Lady Wildcats.

Pitching “weakness” in back-to-back Challenge games Friday against Karns (10-2 loss) and Alcoa (12-2) was resolved by tourney’s end, Sams said after his team’s 1-3 Challenge record.

Bearden (9-14 overall, finishing 5-9 and in sixth place in District 4-AAA) played No. 7 seed Lenoir City in opening round district tourney action Wednesday, May 4 (after deadline).

All 4-AAA tourney games at William Blount.

Bearden-LC winner plays likely No. 3 seed Farragut Thursday, May 5 (time not set at deadline).

First two rounds are single elimination, where BHS, Farragut and No. 5 seed Knoxville Catholic hope to survive into Monday’s double elimination round.

Bearden-Farragut bracket survivor plays No. 2 WBHS, while Catholic would face top-seed Maryville if it beat No. 8 West May 4 and No. 4 Heritage Thursday.

Championship games are Wednesday, May 11, and if necessary, Thursday, May 12.
