Friday-to-Friday hot run ends in Irish soccer title

Knoxville Catholic’s near miraculous eight-day turnaround in boys soccer, going from a No. 6 seed in District 4-AAA and a losing record to knocking off local powers West and Maryville, culminated with special joy Friday night, May 13.

Labeled as “young and inexperienced” and “still learning” so often by head coach Mark Leader after losses, Catholic’s five-game ride of domination, ending with a 2-1 victory on the road in Farragut and 4-AAA tourney title, surprised even the Irish boss.

“Did I think we could be here, absolutely not,” Leader said about winning the tourney title and hosting Oak Ridge in a Region 2-AAA semifinal Tuesday, May 17, at KCHS. “But they’ve turned a corner and I’m very proud of them.”
