Walker, Merrill hat tricks lead Webb Soccer back to state

A warm Saturday afternoon could have taken its toll on a Webb School of Knoxville Boys Soccer team plagued by a lack of depth throughout 2011.

Throw in having to play two 10-minute overtime periods after blowing a 2-0 lead, giving up the tying goal against St. George's (8-7-003) with less than three minutes to play, and this substate task at hand May 21 at Webb may have seemed overwhelming.

But behind a dazzling performance from junior forward Will Walker and his three goals, plus a “hat trick” (three goals) following a strong effort from senior forward Jackson Merrill, and overtime was no problem.

“You got to dig deep, even though you're really, really tired, and it ended up working out for us,” said Walker, joining Merrill to score two OT goals each making this Division II-A substate game a rout, 6-2, and putting the Spartans (11-5-4) back into the TSSAA State Tournament this week.
