Hammond lays out redistricting plan

Farragut’s representatives on Knox County Commission and Board of Education might soon serve in identical districts, with new redistricting lines expected in August or September, one commissioner recently announc-ed.

School Board representative Thomas Deakins and Commissioner Richard Briggs should soon begin serving the exact same constituents, announced Knox County Commissioner Mike Hammond during his address to Concord-Farragut Republican Club Thursday, June 2, in Seasons Café.

“We met with the School Board and asked that the School Board consider putting all School Board districts and the Commission districts the same,” said Hammond, Commissioner since 2004 when elected in 5th District [including Farragut] now an At-Large Seat 10 representative.

“… We should have redistricting done in 60 to 90 days.

“We have one Commissioner that has three School Board members [in his district],” Hammond added about Commission vice chairman Brad Anders, 6th District.”

As for County employee pay raises, later voted down by Hammond and other Commissioners in passing Mayor Tim Burchett’s $652.9 million budget, Hammond said Knox County Sheriff’s Office “is very motivated. It would cost $1 million for a one percent raise. … Where’s the money going to come from?”
