Backstrom goes from FHS assistant to CAK boys soccer boss

Christian Academy of Knoxville announces the addition of Kurt Backstrom as new Warriors boys varsity soccer head coach.

Backstrom moves from Farragut High School where he served as varsity assistant under head coach Wallie Culbreth for several years, helping deliver a pair of Class AAA state titles.

“Coach Backstrom brings a wealth of experience in both soccer knowledge and sports ministry,” CAK athletic director Steve Denny said. “We are looking forward to his leadership as a very well respected person in the Knoxville community.”

With 30 years of playing and coaching experience, Backstrom holds a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from Howard University and a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Kentucky.

Backstrom becomes CAK’s seventh head coach in a program that has celebrated six state championships during the last 10 years. He replaces Dave Parker, who served one season as Warriors boys varsity head coach.

“CAK has established an expectation for a title game experience and coach Backstrom is committed to working toward that goal,” Denny said.

Backstrom played college soccer at IUP, where he earned Regional All-American and all-conference honors in 1971.
