New winning experiences for FDCC 9-Hole champs Childs, MacDonald

Enjoying a rare moment as queen of the links, perhaps Gina Childs soon will become the “Fifth Musketeer” among Fox Den County Club's Ladies 9-Hole Club members.

Childs said she didn't know at the time that converting a short putt on No. 9 hole was so huge, allowing her a one-stroke victory during the annual FDCC Ladies 9-Hole Club Championship final round Wednesday , Aug. 3.

“It's a huge deal because I've never won anything in my life; I've never been competitive and I'm not athletic,” Childs said. “And my golf clubs are 15 years old.

“I've played [golf] all my life, but I've never played well,” Childs added. “I never really played it serious until about three years ago.”

The two-day tournament saw Childs edge out final day playing partners Betty MacDonald, who was named Low Net champion (handicap), and Jeanne Ahlgren — two members of 9-Hole Ladies Club's “Four Musketeers” according to Ahlgren, along with club member Sandy Thompson and former member Lisa Leskanic.

Childs said she won despite playing better during the tournament's first nine holes Tuesday, Aug. 2, because she was tired Wednesday. “I did everything better yesterday,” she said.

MacDonald, who said she started playing golf seriously when joining FDCC about 18 months ago, added that her Low Net top finish is the first time she's ever won anything athletically.

As for club camaraderie, “9-Hole women are the most fun group of women; none of them are that serious,” Childs said of the 27-member club. “The friendships are more important that the golf.”

In-between her final nine holes Aug. 3, Childs found ample time to praise Ahlgren, age 74, who has enjoyed success as a local tennis player and continues playing golf despite two knee replacements.

“She's a remarkable person, and a nice person on top of all that,” Childs said of Ahlgren, a FDCC member since 1984.

Other 9-Hole finishers, in order, were Cindy Omastiak, Kachelle O'Connor, Jenny Miedaner, Cheyonne McKeown, Kathy Metcalf and Angie Beeler.
