Lady Spartans
Webb School of Knoxville

Rest assured, Liz Newsom won’t be timid whenever her Webb School of Knoxville Lady Spartans defense make serious

mistakes.

“I’m a little bit controlling,” said Newsom, junior goalkeeper and three-year starter who head coach Jennifer Longnecker said “is one of the top goalies in the city, easily. … She’s a great leader, positive. Talks on the field.”

Newsom will help lead a Webb girls soccer team strong on juniors and contributing freshmen, which returns nine starters and features “a lot of just really solid players that you probably could move to a lot of different positions,” Longnecker said. “I have a lot of flexibility this year. And I’ve got some speed.

“I think this team is one of the teams that might do more than we’ve done before,” Longnecker added.

When Newsom first started as a Lady Spartans goalkeeper, “I was kinda quiet, but it didn’t take long to start yelling at people,” Newsom said. “I get kinda scary.”

Anna Davis, All-District senior forward beginning her fifth straight season as a Webb starter, said she needs to work on “probably learning to play every position … I think I’m going to have to play a little bit of everything.”

Longnecker labels Davis “great with the ball at her feet. … A good, mature player. She may have been our top scorer last year.”

Longnecker said junior Emily Edkin, now the starting sweeper, “did a great job” after two Jamboree scrimmages Saturday morning, Aug. 6. “She’s a tough player.”

Freshmen Hannah Seay and Emma Creveling will join junior returning starters Janelle Calhoun and Jackie Martyn to provide outside defensive depth.

“That’s a little bit of flexibility, which I’ve never had,” Longnecker said.

Freshman Hannah Robinson will start on defense.

Erin Scott, junior All-District defender and returning starter, is expected back by late September following knee surgery, the coach added.

Senior Elizabeth Cope, a returning starter, and freshman Caroline Cassity fortify center-midfield. “They’re tall, big and aggressive,” Longnecker said. “And good at supporting and switching and shooting.”

Outside midfielders are junior Katie Thompson, a returning starter, and freshman Cassady Greene, who are “both quality, solid players,” Longnecker said.

Senior Olivia Cecil “will make a difference in the midfield and up front,” Longnecker said.

Senior Maggie Mamantov, returning center-midfielder, is recovering from hip surgery, and should be back by Sept. 1 according to Longnecker.

Freshmen forward Peighton Meske will play up top and add speed, while freshman Halsey Howard will add forward depth.

The Webb career of senior sweeper Caitlin Brandow may be over following an ACL (knee) tear this summer, Longnecker said. “She was a key part of the team, so it really hurts to lose somebody like that.”

Davis said she is “at home as a forward, but I have to pick up the team a little bit and help them out at defense,” adding that playing defense “is a little difficult, especially the sweeper. You have to pick up the team when they fall.”

Davis said her soccer career almost is over. “It’s a little bit sad because I won’t be playing college,” she said.

Recalling her eighth-grade season as a very young starter, Davis said, “The jerseys were big on me, I was little.”
