Remembering 9/11

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four commercial jet planes and attempted to fly them into several U.S. targets.

One of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11, crashed into Tower One of the World Trade Center at 8:50 a.m. United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into Tower Two at 9:04 a.m.

As the world watched, Tower Two collapsed to the ground at about 10 a.m. Unfortunately, this horrible scene was duplicated at 10:30 a.m., when Tower One crashed to the ground.

This terrorist attack brought about the death of about 3,000 men, women and children from nations around the world. Less than a month later, in October 2001, the United States launched Operation Enduring Freedom, an attack on al-Qaida in Afghanistan, and later launched Operation Iraqi Freedom against al-Qaida in Iraq in March 2003, both resulting in the loss of more than 6,000 American lives.

We are approaching the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. At this time, farragutpress invites its readers to remember a friend or loved one lost in the line of duty by submitting a brief memoir of a fallen soldier, policeman or fireman to be included in a farragutpress Remembrance Page, “We Remember: We Will Never Forget Our Fallen Heroes,” to be published Thursday, Sept. 8.
