Webb routed; star off team

NASHVILLE — Webb was shut out for the first time since 2005 as the Spartans fell to defending Division II-A state champ Ensworth 40-0 Friday, Aug. 29.

This road loss is the first time Webb (0-2) has lost back-to-back games since 2008.

The Spartans also lost a critical weapon. Star running back/defensive back Aaron Blance was dismissed from Webb early Friday morning due to violation of school conduct. The junior was a former 1,000-yard rusher.

Ensworth junior tailback Corn Elder broke a 96-yard run and finished with over 150 yards rushing and three all-purpose touchdowns, including an interception return. The Tigers (2-0) led 27-0 at halftime, as Ensworth’s defense ended with three interceptions and five sacks.

Caleb Blance rushed for 83 yards on 15 carries for Webb. Senior defensive end Neil Butler recovered a fumble.

“We knew they had a strong offense, but we still weren’t ready for that,” Butler said. “We can improve and just continue to work hard this week.”
