Deakins named school board chair

Now that Thomas Deakins, 6th District representative for Knox County Board of Education, is chairman of the board, parents might wonder what it means for their child’s school.

“I don’t think it means anything,” Deakins said. “I represent those schools no matter what. Now, in the chair role, I’m just a figurehead of the board basically.

“The chair works with the superintendent to set the agenda, so I could probably make [my school’s] issues known, but I do that anyway. I don’t feel there will be a change at all really.”

Deakins was elected chair for a term of one year during the board’s regular session meeting Wednesday, Sept. 7.

“I made it known to the board that I was interested in the chair position” during the work session the night before, he said.

One of the issues Deakins would like to see the board address soon is increasing community and parent involvement, particularly in meeting the new state standards.

“One of the big things that the Board needs to really promote is the new changes that we have from the state in regard to adequate yearly progress and where we need to go as a school district,” Deakins said.

“We need the involvement and the cooperation with parents and our community because I don’t think we need to just lay this burden on our teachers.”

He added, “Involvement is crucial. I think in several areas of the county we have that, but in some areas we don’t. Somehow we’ve got to stress that message. Great schools are driven by great teachers and great community involvement.”
