our view: Missing Marker

Shortly after the turn of the 19th Century, local Daughters of the American Revolution installed a marker on a piece of land indicating the birthplace of Civil War hero and the United Statesí first U.S. Navy admiral, James David Glasgow Farragut.

After more than 100 years that marker has disappeared.

It is common knowledge the property owners over the years did not enjoy having the marker on their property.

Town of Farragut and Knox County officials have verified that an offer to remove and relocate the marker from its site at the Townís expense was made by both entities and declined by the present property owner.

The marker was and is the property of the people of the United States and its whereabouts should be made known.

The marker should be returned to this area and installed on a site where the American people can celebrate the amazing contribution Adm. Farragut made to this country.

Itís the right thing to do.
