Mitchell-T, Ads sweep region golf

Mitchell Thomas received two nice presents for his 18th birthday Tuesday evening, Sept. 27.

On second thought, presents are given — Thomas and his Farragut Admirals boys golf team earned their Region 2-AAA team crown by edging powerful Halls (298-302) after 18 holes at Fox Den Country Club.

Thomas led the way, winning region individual honors at 1-under par (71). Teammate Stuart Thomas was second (73), while Chris Hutson (77) and Mark Dalton (77) helped secure the Admirals’ team trip to next week’s Class AAA state tourney (Oct. 4-5) at WillowBrook in Manchester.

“I didn’t hit the ball near as well as I wanted to ... but I got the putter rolling early,” said Mitchell, a senior, who sank a roughly 30-foot birdie putt at No. 3 and chipped in for par at No. 4 (34, front nine). A 10-foot par putt at No. 16 and five-foot par putt at No. 17 helped him stay on top.

Firing a 74, Wes Gosselin of Hardin Valley Academy, defending region champ, was the only other Westside individual golfer earning a state trip.
