While FHS holds off Catholic for 4-AAA title, Lady Hawks stun AC

While Farragut held off a stubborn Knoxville Catholic volleyball team to win the District 4-AAA Tournament crown at Heritage High School last week, Hardin Valley Academy took yet another huge step in program improvement: upsetting Anderson County on ACs home court to win the District 3-AAA tourney title.

The Lady Hawks, No. 2 in district regular season play (14-2) behind ACs perfect 16-0, improved to 41-15 overall after a 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 three game match sweep Wednesday, Oct. 12. The Lady Mavericks fell to 43-7 overall.

The victory earned HVA host status for Region 2-AAA tourney play Tuesday, Oct. 18, facing Catholic in one semifinal (after deadline).

Farragut, improving to 46-4 overall following its perfect 16-0 run to easily win 4-AAA regular season honors, took on Anderson County in the other semifinal.

Both semifinal winners played in the region title game Tuesday, then go on to Sectional play this evening (Thursday, Oct. 21). Region 2-AAA champ to host Region 1-AAAs runner-up, and 2-AAAs runner-up traveling east to face 1-AAAs champ.

Semifinal losers had their seasons ended Tuesday.

State tourney play in Murfreesboro begins next week.

Farragut held off a late KCHS charge in the district tourney title game Oct. 12 behind the play of tournament Most Valuable Player Kayla Hartman (32 assists, 14 points).

The Lady Ads won the first two games 25-23 and 25-18 only to see Catholic (29-26) rally for a 25-22 win in game three followed by a 25-19 victory in game four.

Farragut won the deciding game five 15-9.

Senior outside hitters Paige West and Julia Alves each contributed 17 kills and five blocks for FHS, with Alves adding 15 points.

Lady Irish leaders were All-tourney honoree Rachel Kozemko (15 kills), Morgan Lyle (27 assists) and Elise Walker (17 digs and 15 points).
