Carwash to pioneer technology in Farragut

Jim Rooney, owner of 3 Minute Magic Carwash, is bringing technology yet unseen in the United States to Farragut when he opens his next location off Kingston Pike.

Rooney hopes to open at 10874 Kingston Pike in spring 2012, pioneering an automated polishing technology he researched in Europe.

“It’s a big deal in professional car washing,” Rooney said.

“It’s fun to keep going forward with the technology every time we build these,” he added.

The carwash will include 3 Minute Magic’s well-known conveyor wash concept, which pulls a driver through an automated wash and dry tunnel while the vehicle’s in neutral. New at this site will be the automated polishing tunnel.

Traffic will enter the site from Kingston Pike, navigate through the pay booths, enter the car wash and then stop at the vacuum bays. From the vacuum bays, customers either can exit the property or enter the polishing tunnel.

But before any of that can happen, “There will be a lot of remodeling,” Rooney said.

The renovations will include taking out the unused gas pumps and convenience store and remodeling the building to accommodate two side-by-side tunnels, both with windows and abundant natural light.

“We want to really open it up and bring in natural light,” Rooney said.

“Then there’s that sense of safety,” he added, saying his car washes were designed to avoid the claustrophobic feeling some can have.

The building also will be extended to make the tunnels longer and more effective.

“It’s be a really cool tunnel in so many ways,” Rooney said.

The Farragut 3 Minute Magic Carwash will use energy efficient, stainless steel equipment in both tunnels, and will recycle the water it uses.

Rooney said the technology had improved drastically in recent years: “The automation has really come far and the quality isn’t random anymore.”

3 Minute Magic employs “hybrid tunnels,” which feature soft cloth, foam and high pressure cleaning equipment.

Rooney also has pioneered a “Fast Pass,” which allows customers to have an unlimited number of washes for a monthly fee.

“We have lots of members,” Rooney said, speculating that was because of the convenience — a computer reads the RFID Fast Pass without the driver having to scan it or even roll down a window — and also because it allows customers to pre-plan their monthly budgets.

“So it becomes very effortless and convenient,” he said.

Three Minute Magic Car Wash is sponsor of farragutpress’s How the West Was Won annual high school football trophy competition.
