Bearden eliminates Lady Hawks, then rebounds at Science Hill from FHS loss

The Bearden High School girls soccer team made an emphatic statement Tuesday night, Oct. 25, then another one Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs scored two early goals en route to a 4-2 victory over Hardin Valley Academy in the opening round of the Region 2-AAA tourney at HVA.

Bearden (18-4-1) overcame a 1-0 loss to Farragut in the region finals Oct. 27 to whip Science Hill 4-1 Saturday, Oct. 29, at SCHS, earning a trip to this week’s state tournament in Chattanooga.

Against HVA, whose season ends at 13-4-3, “It was really important for us to come out and get off to a fast start,” said BHS junior forward Brennan Day, who tallied in the fourth minute by chipping in a shot from 10 yards.

Junior Gabrielle Gianeselli scored nine minutes later, making it 2-0. “It felt awesome to get that goal,” said Gianeselli, whose second goal in the 78th minute killed an HVA rally. “We have heart on this team and we just wanted it more. We want a state championship.”

Bearden coach Eric Turner said his team “got off to a fast start and we controlled most of the game.” BHS took a 3-0 lead in the 66th minute on a marker by Jessica Logan, who scored off a corner kick from Ellen Dickinson.

Hardin Valley finally scored in the 66th minute, an Emily Smith goal, then added a penalty kick in the 75th minute from Ellie Myrick. “I was really proud of the girls at the end for not giving up,” HVA head coach Mike McLean said. “The difference in this game ... Bearden is just so strong.”
