Ads survive WB, travel to Murfreesboro

The conditions were sloppy, but Farragut’s defense successfully sloshed around Bill Clabo Field and held William Blount’s offense to seven points.

Despite gaining just 185 total yards (-2 passing), the Ads managed a 10-7 home win on a chilly, wet Senior Night Friday, Oct. 27, earning FHS a No. 5 seed (third quadrant) in the Class 6A playoffs and a trip to Murfreesboro versus No. 4 Blackman Friday.

“We’ve had the ‘bend but don’t break’ attitude,” said senior linebacker Tyler Nugent, who joined linebacker Nick Henningsen with a team-leading 10 tackles each, helping the Ads (7-3, 5-2) hold WB to 261 yards total offense.

Senior defensive back Jacob Johnson added nine and senior linebacker Garrett Bowdle seven.

“We, at Farragut, expect to make the playoffs every year just because of high expectations, so we had to come out here and get it done tonight,” FHS senior quarterback Cody Rule said.

Farragut junior kicker Jonathan King continued his string of long field goals made by nailing a 53-yarder, with room to spare, for a quick 3-0 lead with 6:34 left in the first quarter.

William Blount (3-6, 3-4) scored its only points when quarterback Hunter Saunders (11-of-30, 162 yards passing) escaped what seemed to be a certain sack, rolled right and hit a wide open Brooks Cunning-ham at midfield for a 75-yard TD just 90 seconds after the field goal.

The Admirals answered with a nine-play, 80-yard touchdown march ending with Johnson’s 24-yard scoring run at the 5:53 mark of the second quarter. Johnson rushed for 132 yards (20 carries).

While two Ads drives deep into Govs territory ended in missed field goals, Farragut’s defense held William Blount on downs at the FHS 33 with 5:23 to play.

Then, after the Ads lost a fumble one play later, Farragut again held WB on downs at the FHS 33, this time with 2:56 left.
