Despins duo lead FHS hockey rally past Whalers

For all of Lucas Despins’ talents as a Farragut High School hockey player, the junior outdid himself Thursday night.

Back in skates for only one week after a bout with mononucleosis, Despins scored five goals in less than two periods, with help from triplet brother Gage assisting three times, in a wild Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association High School season-opening game versus the Whalers at the Icearium Nov. 17.

Ahead 5-1 before a Whalers’ rally put them up 6-5 late, Farragut’s 6-on-3-man advantage thanks to a pair of Whalers penalties at the very end of the game, plus FHS pulling its goalie, was critical. The Despins duo reversed roles: Lucas assisting Gage twice, leading a three-goal FHS rally in the final 1:24 for an 8-6 victory.

“There was a week-and-a-half I was in bed ... missed two weeks of hockey,” Lucas said.

About his chemistry with Gage, Lucas said, “We were connecting really well. We get each other’s assist. We know where each other’s going to be.”

Evan Kinchler assisted twice on Lucas’ goals, while Justin Richwine assisted his first goal.

Thomas Detchemendy’s goal in the final few seconds, assisted by Lucas, sealed the deal.

“Gavin Gauld, he’s a big centerman, and he played really well,” FHS head coach Rob Despins said. “Harley [Gorlewski], he’s just got lots of wheels out there. He’s really moving and fore-checking and moving the puck up.”
