Lady Ads win 1st 9
Smith leads FHS girls past West; boys fall hard

Farragut High School junior guard Whitney Smith entered the 2011-12 basketball season thinking that people might take the Lady Admirals lightly.

Well, nobody's taking Farragut lightly now.

“Coming in, I thought people might underestimate us,” said Smith, who scored 16 points to lead the Lady Admirals to a 60-42 victory over West High in a District 4-AAA tilt Friday night, Dec. 9, at Farragut. “I think people underestimated us because we're young.

“But we’ve proven that we can score and we've proven that we can play.”

Farragut remained perfect (9-0 overall, 2-0 in the district). The Lady Admirals wasted little time putting the Lady Rebels away. Farragut opened a 17-11 lead by first quarter's end and continued to methodically build its lead.

Smith led the way but the Lady Admirals junior got plenty of help from her supporting cast. Farragut's inside game was especially potent against the Rebels. Center Katie Overton scored 11 points. Forward Anna Brinson added nine. The Lady Admirals got a spark off the bench from sophomore Madyson Newby, who provided a post presence with 10 points.

“The thing that makes us successful is our post play,” Smith said. “Our post players can score. If they don't score, they’re good at passing and that helps the rest of us because we can penetrate.”

Farragut head coach Wes Edmonds said that he was impressed with Newby’s performance.

“She's really finding her time,” Edmonds said of Newby. “When she first started, she would panic. But she’s done a really good job.

“She's been coachable and she rarely takes a bad shot now.”

Meanwhile, the Farragut boys have had a streaky season.

The Admirals (3-6, 0-2) opened the 2011-12 season with three consecutive losses before winning three straight.

Now the Ads, who dropped a 77-46 decision to West Friday, entered the week in the midst of another three-game losing streak.

Farragut, which dropped district contests to Lenoir City and the Rebels last week, was without head coach Chris Cool. Cool was serving the second of a three-game suspension after being ejected from the Admirals’ loss to Campbell County Dec. 2.

Assistant coach Chris Garman ran things Friday night and said he knew that the Admirals were in for a challenge against West, a preseason favorite in the rough and tumble district.

Early on, the Ads hung tough. Farragut actually led throughout much of the first quarter before a late surge gave the Rebels a 15-14 lead by stanza's end.

“We knew coming in that we had a tall order but we had a good first quarter,” Garman said. “I think their pressure really got to us in the second quarter.”

Indeed, something troubled the Admirals after the opening eight minutes. The Rebels, who closed the opening stanza with a flourish, continued to dominate in the second quarter.

West outscored Farragut 25-9 in the second stanza to open a 40-23 lead at the break.

JayJuan Mitchell led West with 15 points. Calvin Walker added 13 and Nigel Bethel finished with 11.

Farragut's Blake Williams led all scorers with 18. Demarcus Martin added 15 for the Admirals.
