Southwest Elementary bids received

• Rouse Construction submitted a low bid of $14,399,000 to build Southwest Elementary School in the Northshore Town Centre development, which could be approved later this month.



Unemployment benefit applications down

• The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to 366,000, the fewest since May 2008, although the national unemployment rate is about 8.6 percent.



USPS postpones closures

• The U.S. Postal Service announced last week it would hold off on closing any more post offices or mail facilities until May 15, 2012, to allow Congress time to work on a plan to save the service.


Coal for Christmas

• The Beacon Center of Tennessee awarded the state’s liquor lobby its annual “Lump of Coal” award for its successful effort to block wine sales in grocery stores, a move it deems economically harmful.



Grocery chains merge

• Bi-Lo LLC announced its will acquire Winn-Dixie for a price of more than $560 million, resulting in a combined chain with 690 grocery stores and 63,000 employees in eight states.
