Food Lion closing stores

• Food Lion announced it would close 25 Tennessee stores, including stores in Knoxville, Maryville and Sevierville, and reduce operations at a Clinton distribution center, effectively displacing 1,100 workers.



ALDI to open in February

• ALDI grocery store will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening Thursday, Feb. 2, at ALDI’s third Knoxville-area store, 110 Moss Grove Blvd.



School builder approved

• Last week, Knox County School Board approved a $15.5 million contract for Rouse Construction to build Southwest Elementary School in Northshore Town Center.


Hostess files for bankruptcy ... again

• Hostess Brands Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week after failing to reach an agreement with unions on pension and health benefits, and only months after emerging from bankruptcy protection last September.



Haslam proposes grocery tax cuts

• Gov. Bill Haslam, in a 55-bill package presented to the state legislature, is calling for lower Sales Tax rates on groceries, among other things.



Retailer recalls radioactive tissue holders

• Bed Bath & Beyond has issued a recall notice for Dual Ridge Metal Boutique Tissue Holders, which contain Cobalt-60 and emitted low levels of radioactivity.
