• SIMPSON, Joseph Eugene “Gene,” age 81,
went to be with his Heavenly Father Aug. 27, 2012, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was preceded in death by his parents P.L. “Red” and Olivia Moore Simpson; brother, James “Doc” Simpson; sister, Margaret Price; and aunt, Frances Sharble. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra; devoted stepson, Bill Dean; brother, Charles P “Herky” and wife, Sandra Simpson; nephew, Phillip Simpson; brother-in-law, Ed Price; and several nieces. He was a lifelong member of South Knoxville Baptist Church and was a devout Christian. Being an outstanding athlete in high school and college, he received a bonus offer from the New York Yankees. In 1953 he played basketball in the All Armed Forces Tournament at Madison Square Garden and was elected Most Valuable Player. After 37 years of service, he retired from Chapman Drug Company. Family will receive friends on Wednesday Aug. 29, 2012, from 2 to 4 p.m. with a service following at 4 p.m. with Dr. Glenn Sullivan officiating. Family and friends will meet at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery (John Sevier Highway) at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012.

• LOCKWOOD, Elwyn E. “Al,” age 86,
went home to be with our Lord Jesus on August 29, 2012, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1952 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked at Rocketdyne, a division of North American Aviation in Southern California, where he and his wife Onalee lived most of their adult lives. He worked in fuels and engines for the rockets of the Apollo missions and some of those engines are hanging in the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. today. He retired from Rocketdyne in 1989. He and his wife, Onalee, were married in 1944 just before he was sent overseas near the end of WWII, when he served in the army. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Lula Lockwood and a brother Coral Lockwood, all of Williamston, MI, where he was born and grew up. He is survived by his wife, Onalee (of 67 years); and their six children, Karla (Jeff) Beason, Sharon (Rick) Meador, Renee Lockwood, Dennis (Michelle) Lockwood, Doreen (Ken) Bracken, Gregory (Sandy) Lockwood and one brother Royce (Barbara) Lockwood. • FULLER, Marion Hoth, age 97,
of Knoxville went to be with the Lord and her daughters, Judi Bruhn and Rachael Siegelin on Wednesday, August 29, 2012. Marion was dearly loved by her family and friends. • CAHILL, Benjamin Michael, age 26,
of Knoxville passed away early Thursday morning, August 30, 2012, at Parkwest Medical Center. Benjamin graduated in Special Education from Farragut HS in 2005, attended Farragut Middle School, Karns Intermediate and Ft. Sanders where Ben received wonderful care from his dedicated teachers, aids, and peer tutors. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Marcella Cahill of Columbus, Ohio, Amanda and Elmer Helling of St. Charles, Mo. Benjamin is survived by his parents, Mary (Helling) and David Cahill; brothers, Chris Cahill and wife, Jina; and their daughters, Gabriella and Machale of Knoxville, Tim Cahill, wife, Lori Cahill, and their daughter, Rebekah Cahill of Fort Worth, Texas; grandfather, Clifford Cahill of Columbus, Ohio; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Benjamin’s mother and father express their deep gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Children Hospitals in Knoxville, Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio, and also, Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville, and the entire staff at Statcare Pulmonary Consultants for their loving care and support throughout Ben’s life. • BURCH, Rev. Robert Cunningham, age 73,
of Knoxville, went to be with his Lord Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012. The Rev. Robert Cunningham Burch was born on Nov. 4, 1938, in Lufkin, TX. He attended Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, TX on a golf scholarship and later graduated from TCU in 1962. Rev. Burch attended Asbury Theological Seminary, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and later received his Doctorate of Ministry from Mid-America Theological Seminary in Memphis in 1990. He was the Baptist Student Union Director at Texas A&M University from 1967 to 1973, and later became the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in 1974 until 2001. He was a Trustee at Southwestern Theological Seminary from 1993-2005. Throughout the span of his ministry, he was a gifted Bible teacher who taught people how the scriptures could make a relevant difference in their lives. He had a passion for missions and was influential with the numerous students who attended Calvary while attending college at UT. For many years, his sermons were broadcast daily on a daily radio program, “The Calvary Pulpit”. After his retirement from Calvary in 2001, he served as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Misawa, Japan. It was there where he became ill with Leukemia. Rev. Burch is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Katherine Burch; and children and spouses, Katherine and John Jones, Robert Burch Jr. and wife, Rima, David and AnnRose Burch, Paul and Gina Burch and Liz and Seth Petree and 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Joseph Burch and wife Becky, his sister Jane Burross and her husband Larry; many nieces and nephews and devoted friends. The family will receive friends at Calvary Baptist Church, 3200 Kingston Pike, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2012 with Funeral Services to follow at 7 p.m. Family and friends will gather at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Highland Memorial Cemetery on Sutherland Avenue for Graveside Services.
