TBCA honors, early diamond swings in 2011
Coach of Year Buckner sees Ads roll in scrimmage

No numbered jerseys, no scoreboard operation, no official stats — and veteran umpires were conducting on-the-job training with new boys in blue.

The baseball players in blue — navy blue-clad and three-time defending Class AAA state champion Farragut versus royal blue-clad Division II-AA power Chattanooga McCallie — held a scrimmage Saturday afternoon, Feb. 19, at FHS’s John Heatherly Field.

In this unofficial kick-off to the high school baseball season, the Admirals took up where they left off in Murfreesboro last May, crushing the Blue Tornado 14-0.

Leading the way is FHS second-year skipper Matt Buckner, recently named 2010 Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Coach of the Year in Class AAA.

As for 2011’s first tune-up, Farragut pitchers Philip Pfeifer (two innings), Derek Chandler (two innings), Xander Taylor (two innings) and Jordan Newby (one inning) combined to fire a no-hitter with 18 strikeouts and just one walk in seven innings.

Offensively, shortstop A.J. Simcox ended with four singles and three RBI. Taylor, who started in right field, stroked three hits that included a double and RBI. Chandler Vannoy, third baseman, had two singles and two RBI.

The game’s lone home run belonged to center fielder Cameron Strickland, who nailed a frozen rope shot beyond left field.

Nicky Delmonico, former All-state shortstop who’s now the starting catcher, laced a two-RBI double and, moving to center field late in the game, preserved the no-hitter with a sliding catch. Scotty Miller, left fielder, had three RBI and one hit. Second baseman Nick Senzel singled.

Buckner said his 2011 Ads are pretty much set at catcher, shortstop and all outfield spots, but “third, first and second [base] are still some identity spots.”
