New Summer Music Choir Camp coming to FHS July 8-12; registrations are sought

Farragut High School choir department is taking registrations now for its inaugural FHS Summer Music Choir Camp July 8 through July 12.

“We are offering the choir camp for rising first- through ninth-graders,” FHS co-choir director Kirstine Buchanan said. “They don’t necessarily have to be a Farragut Intermediate or (Farragut) Primary student. They can go to private school or any school in the area. It’s open to all students in our area.”

Registration is open now and will continue until the camp is filled. However, space is limited so she urges students to register early. To register, visit the link on the school’s Give Backs website: https://app.memberhub.gives/fhschoircamp/Campaign/Details

Cost is $125 per student for the week. It includes all of the students’ music and snacks.

The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon., Monday through Friday, July 8-12, at the school. It will end with a performance by participants starting at 11 a.m., Friday July 12, for “parents to come and watch what they were working on all week,” Buchanan said.

“We’re going to have our current students working as counselors,” she added. “Alumni and other Farragut musicians are going to be serving as section leaders.

“They’ll teach some of the classes and Mr. (Mitchell) Moore (choir director and KCS Choral Area professional learning specialist) and I will direct a choir of students and throw them all together for a concert that Friday.”

At the camp, “they will learn all of the foundational things about choral singing,” Buchanan said.

“They will learn performance etiquette, how we prepare for a performance, what does it look like to memorize music,” she added.

“What if we add movement? How does that change what our performance looks like?”

Buchanan, who has a background in elementary music, said it’s important “just getting a taste of what it’s like to be a high school choral student.

“They get to see our facilities and sing on our stage on our risers, and they’ll have a pianist; so it will be a cool experience for them,” she added.
