Farragut at Bearden in win-or-go-home District 4-3A boys soccer semi

A team Farragut boys soccer beat 6-1 in the regular season found itself tied with the Admirals — and the season on the line for both teams — with less than 20 minutes left in this District 4-3A Tournament quarterfinal home match for FHS Monday evening, May 6.

But Bradley Culbreth’s boys in Navy blue responded twice, using a Zane Unger’s long free kick to set up junior Gavin Samples’ goal from 25 yards out, slightly to the right of center, with 17:24 left in the match.

Less than two minutes later, the Ads essentially sewed up a victory after senior Brooks Burnette converted a penalty kick for an eventual 3-1 Farragut victory.

Scoring the game’s first goal from about 25 yards out in the match’s 10th minute, Burnette’s successful penalty kick came after two failed FHS pk attempts.

“We had a lot of missed opportunities the first 15 minutes, and then we got lazy in ball movement. ... But they fought through it,” head coach Culbreth said about his No. 3-seeded Ads, improving to 7-5-1.

Despite being the No. 6 district seed, the Governors still finished with a 9-8-1 overall mark. “I am very proud of them, and we can build on that,” said WBHS head coach Drew Ownby, whose team scored on a penalty kick from Jonas Torres with 2:03 left in the first half.

Next for Farragut is a trip to No. 2 seed Bearden in the district semifinals beginning at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 8. The winner earns a Region 2-3A berth. The loser’s season ends.
