9-run 1st inning lifts Lady Ads at Bearden 13-3

KNOXVILLE — Devon Weller had a big day at the plate for the Farragut High School softball team on Thursday, April 5.

Weller, a sophomore second baseman, clubbed her first career home run in the top of the first inning of the Lady Ads 13-3 five-inning District 4-AAA victory over rival Bearden at BHS’s Kim Hazelwood Field.

Weller scored the game’s first run after her double.But she delivered the biggest blow of the opening frame when she hit a grand slam that cleared the center field fence, giving the Lady Admirals a 9-0 lead.

“I wasn’t sure that it was gone. I was booking it around second and then I saw the umpire make the signal, said Weller, who finished the game with two hits, three runs, five runs batted in and a stolen base. “It was great to see my teammates waiting for me at home plate.”

Katie Tuggle and Anna Lynn had RBI doubles in the first inning while Emily Litrakis singled and scored for Farragut (11-4, 7-1).

The Lady Bulldogs (6-8, 2-6) scored a run in the first, which started when Bearden leadoff hitter Amaya Goodloe legged out a bunt single. She advanced to second when her sister, Shakara, reached on an infield single. Amaya scored on a sacrifice fly by Rachel Colwell.

The Lady Ads went up 10-1 in the second when Lynn drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

They added two more in the third. Weller had a scoring single that plated Joely Gruhn, who walked. Weller came home on a sacrifice fly by Tuggle.

The Lady Bulldogs pulled to within 12-3 in the bottom of the frame. Amaya Goodloe, who finished the contest with three hits, singled. She came home when Shakara Goodloe, who also had three hits, doubled. Shakara scored when Jersey Patterson grounded out.

Lady Ad Andrea Sarhatt singled and stole second. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Weller. Sarhatt came home when Kelsie Tuggle lifted a sacrifice fly.
