More flexible food truck use in Farragut?

Farragut officials are looking at changing course to possibly allow food trucks within Town neighborhoods — with restrictions. Currently, food trucks only are permitted at Town-sponsored events and not in neighborhoods.

However, Vice Mayor Louise Povlin asked Town staff to work with her on changing the Town’s food truck governing ordinance, which was discussed Tuesday, Aug. 4, during the monthly Staff/Developer meeting led by Community Development director Mark Shipley.

“This is already happening in our Town, and several neighborhoods. (Homeowner Associations) reach out to me and say, ‘We don’t want to violate Town ordinances, but there is interest to providing this community gathering opportunity,’ and they make sense,” Povlin said.

“One of the other things is that the neighborhood swim teams like to bring an ice cream truck, or snow cone (truck) or something to that effect to an event like a large swim meet, to service all the people who show up there,” Mayor Ron Williams added. “A lot of times they start early afternoon and end up about 10 o’clock at night. Unless they pack a picnic, there’s not any way to get dinner.

“I think this would be good for homeowner associations to be able to do for swim meets,” he added.

Povlin said, “Well, we will want to have a conversation on the number of permits that would be allowed per year” to any given vendor.

Alderman Ron Pinchok suggested five permits be considered. Povin agreed.

Shipley suggested the issue be a workshop item during the Thursday, Aug. 20, FMPC meeting, a move agreed upon unanimously.
