Another strong start, 8-0, for Underwood’s hoops girls

KNOXVILLE — Bearden High School’s girls basketball team is finishing a long holiday hiatus. But the Lady Bulldogs headed into their extended break with a perfect record.

BHS improved to 8-0 overall with a 54-42 home victory versus Alcoa Saturday afternoon, Dec. 12.

The Lady Bulldogs and all other boys and girls basketball teams representing Knox County Schools will not return to action before Tuesday, Jan. 5, as KCS closed its campuses starting Monday, Dec. 14, due to COVID-19 concerns.

Bearden had a balanced attack versus the Lady Tornadoes. Avery Treadwell, a 6-foot-3 sophomore post, was the top BHS scorer with 20 points. Jennifer Sullivan, a junior guard, added 18.

The Lady Dawgs opened that week with a 70-64 District 4-AAA road win against Maryville Tuesday, Dec. 8.

“This was a great win for us, and it was a great game between two great teams,” BHS head coach Justin Underwood said. “... We played really well.”

The Lady Dawgs got 25 points and 10 rebounds from Zneyah McLaughlin, senior point guard who also had five assists. Treadwell and Emily Gonzalez, junior guard, each scored 16 points, with Treadwell also grabbing 10 rebounds. Sullivan added 13 points.
