Blackbird ready to pamper

Thanh Gildner of Hardin Valley and Barbie Conard of Alcoa have teamed up to open Blackbird Hair Studio, which mostly serves men’s hair and beard care needs, in Sola Salon Studios, 11324 Parkside Drive in Turkey Creek.

Opening Sunday, Feb. 21, the women provide hair cuts, shaves, mini facials and beard trims along with eyebrow, nose and ear waxing.

“It is very similar to a barber shop,” Conard said. “(Men) get hot towels and complimentary beer with their service if they want one,” she added. “It’s just a nice way for them to come, relax, get a steam towel, a shampoo, scalp massage, then go back into the world, look better, feel better.”

“We want to potentially go farther and do more services,” Gildner said, adding they also provide short hair cuts for women.

“We would also like to do non-surgical hair replacement,” Conard added.

While Gildner has been in the business for 15 years, Conard has been in the hair care salon business for eight.

The two women met while working at the same place during their last job, Conard said. “We worked pre-COVID together, post-COVID. … We were together quite a bit. (Gildner) came up to me one day and said, ‘Let’s put our knowledge and our skill set together, …’

“This is the first step to doing the bigger, better,” she added.

As for choosing this location, Conard said, “We didn’t know where the economy was going to go, and this (suite) is very safe for COVID.

“You don’t have to worry about the social distancing,” Gildner added.

Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays.

However, Gildner said clients can request appointments.
